Book Description
The Other Depression: Bipolar Disorder is told from the point of view of a family doctor, who is likely to be the first health care professional a person goes to for treatment of his bipolar symptoms. It describes the basis upon which the diagnosis of bipolar disorder is made, and tells my patients and their families everything I want them to know about their condition. It focuses on the depressive side of the illness, explaining how bipolar depression is different from general (unipolar) depression and why that difference is important. It describes other medical and psychological conditions likely to exist along with bipolar disorder; how depression, mania and mixed states of bipolar disorder can be identified; and what it is like for people to be in each of these stages. It also explores the variations that occur within the bipolar spectrum.
The book discusses the genetic signature and environmental stresses underpinning this disease and how it alters the functioning of the brain. It describes medicines available for the treatment of bipolar disorder, including both its benefits and its side effects. It introduces resources available to bipolar people and their families and suggest strategies for coping with this disease and getting on with life.
